Set in walking distance of the highest hills in SW England, if a happy holiday means swinging from ropes, clambering up walls, splashing through water and generally hurling themselves around, then this is the place for you! YHA Okehampton is a great centre for adventure activities on north Dartmoor. This centre offers Visit England 3 Star Hostel accommodation with easy access to A30, about 3 hours from London.
The Victorian building was originally part of the heritage railway station and for 21 years has been a modern Youth Hostel set in it's own grounds with mix of rooms (2 bed, 4 bed, 5 bed and 6 beds, some en-suite). The hostel retains some of the features of the original building, including the large sliding doors and as such retains the character of the London & South Western Railway building constructed in the 1870's.
Other facilities including free wifi, games room, tv lounge, drying room and fully licensed dining room.
You can book direct by telephoning the hostel or online (eg. Booking.com or YHA).
Good for Walkers!
Lying on the north edge of Dartmoor, there are a variety of excellent walks on our doorstep, from the highest points of Highwill Hays and Yes Tor to remote woodlands at Black-a-Tor Copse, try letterboxing such as venturing out to Cranmere Pool, walking to the healing stone near Kes Tor or visiting the Nine Maidens stone circle for sunrise. For easier walks, try the Granite Way to Meldon Viaduct returning over the top.
The drying rooms with dehumidifiers mean that those wet clothes and boots will dry overnight. Hence for walking groups, wanting to venture onto the moors, you know that your kit should be dry in time for another days adventure.
Good for Cyclists!
It's also ideal for cyclists, as it lies on junction of three main long distance cycle paths, Lands End to John o'Groats, Devon Coast to Coast (NC21) and Transmanche Circuit between Plymouth and Poole. The drying rooms, cycle storage shed and cycle hire shop with it's technician, means that it is a good venue for stopping off on longer trips or just cycling for the weekend, and can cater for the support teams as well.
If you're looking for a short cycle, then leave your bikes at home, and use our cycle shop to take a day trip down the Granite Way trail to Lydford and back.
