MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE LOCAL AREA
Barnabas House B&B is nestled on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. Dartmoor is heaven for those who love the outdoors with excellent walking, cycling, rock climbing/mountaineering, horseriding, sailing, fishing and golf. A little further afield you will find the wide beaches and dramatic cliffs to the North Devon coast, while to the south is the rolling countryside, pretty coves and picturesque harbours.
The Drake's Trail (a 21-mile cycling/walking trail linking Tavistock to Plymouth), Sustrans Cycling Route 27 (also known as the Devon coast-to-coast route - 103 miles from Ilfracombe to Plymouth), the Dartmoor Way (a 95-mile circular cycling/walking route) and the West Devon Way (a 37-mile walking route from Plymouth to Okehampton) all come through Yelverton and are just a few minutes' level walk away. If you don't have a bike, or do not wish to bring it, we have a fabulous cycle shop in the village where you can hire bikes - see Rockin Bikes. And if you do bring your bike, we have secure cycle storage and as Steve is a keen road cyclist, he can recommend many rides in the area (he will even escort you if you like!).
Princetown - the heart of Dartmoor - is just a few miles from us. There are fabulous walks from here. A good starting point is theVisitors Centre which has a wealth of local information and exhibits. There is a great walk on the old railway which runs from Princetown right down to Burrator Reservoir. In fact, you can get a bus to Princetown and then walk back to Yelverton. There are numerous eateries at Princetown, and of course the infamous Dartmoor Prison. You can visit the prison museum, and also nowDartmoor Brewery where you can go on a tour, and buy their beer in their shop. A new whiskey distillery to be built at Princetown has just been announced - watch this space! You will also find near Princetown, Powdermills Pottery.
The historic market town of Tavistock is just 5 miles away. It's easy to spend a few hours pottering through the vibrant Pannier Market, sampling local food or visiting the many individual shops - a High Street the way it used to be.
In contrast the bustling seafaring city of Plymouth with its rich naval heritage and modern shopping centre is only 8 miles away. The Barbican area and The Hoe are very pleasant places to visit. Both an easy bus ride from Yelverton. If you are travelling by train, we are a 20 minute bus ride away - the bus stop runs from opposite Plymouth train station direct to Yelverton and we are a 4 minute level walk from the bus stop.
Steven Spielberg's 'Warhorse' was filmed only 2 miles from Barnabas House; you can visit Morwellham Quay, used for the BBC's 'Edwardian Farm' series, or Dartmoor Zoo, the subject of a Hollywood film starring Matt Damon. If gardens are your thing, visit the 'Garden House' and Keith Wiley's incredible 'Wildside' garden, the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the world famous 'Eden Project' is only an hour's drive away.
History surrounds us here, with some of the finest National Trust properties on our doorstep - Buckland Abbey (once the home of Sir Francis Drake), Cotehele House, Saltram House, Castle Drogo and Lydford Gorge all make for great days out.
And remember, Dartmoor is the home of a world-class collection of archaeological sites, all within easy reach of Barnabas House.
