The Okement Valley - Circular walk - 4 miles This walk heads east along the East Okement River, before climbing a wooded valley to West Cleave, which has splendid views of the surrounding countryside. Walk Waypoints

  1. 1 The walk starts in Simmons Park, Okehampton and is marked by a plaque by the bridge in the car park. Simmons Park itself is a pleasant location for a stroll.
  2. 2 Follow the path on the right hand side of the river until your reach the third footbridge. Cross this and follow the wall keeping it to your left.
  3. 3 After the stone barn, continue through the wooden gateway until you reach the leat. Turn right here and go through the gate, signposted to Fatherford.
  4. 4 Follow the signs to Fatherford through the woods until you reach a railway viaduct. This used to carry the Southern Railway main line to Plymouth. More recently it was used to carry stone from nearby Meldon Quarry and it runs as a weekend passenger service between Exeter and Okehampton.
  5. 5 Go under the viaduct and cross the river by the footbridge. Turn left and walk under the A30.
  6. 6 Continue straight ahead until you reach a footbridge. Cross this and continue through the hole in the stone wall and follow the path up the river valley, keeping the river near to your left. You will reach a steep path with natural steps and handrails. Take care as you walk up this. You will then come to another footbridge at Chapel Ford.
  7. 7 Cross the river and turn left to follow the path up the hill. From the top, West Cleave, there are splendid views of the surrounding countryside.
  8. 8 Continue to the gate in the corner. Go through the gate and walk along the lane until you reach the road. Turn left and continue as far as a cattle grid.
  9. 9 Just past the cattle grid there is a stile. Cross this, following the signpost to Fatherford. Continue to follow the 'path' signs across two more stiles until you reach a small clapper bridge.
  10. 10 A little further on there is a wooden gate. Go through this and turn left down the road under the A30 until you emerge under a small railway bridge. Turn left here and left again, and follow a road until you come to a gate on your right hand side.
  11. 11 Go through this gate into Ball Hill Woods and continue straight ahead. Please keep to the path as you walk through this private woodland. When you reach a gate go through and bear left to another gate. Continuing through this gate will lead you eventually to a leat.
  12. 12 At the leat turn left back towards Simmons Park.
  13. 13 Follow the wall, keeping it on your right, cross the bridge, and turn right to return to the start of the walk.
