AboutEverything we cook in the Riverford Field Kitchen has been grown for flavour in the surrounding fields. This workshop will look at how to prepare, start and look after your own vegetable and herb garden.
Together with Riverford's head gardener Penny Hemming, you'll sow seeds that will give you a full larder for the Winter, such as kale, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and leeks.
A full day workshop full of practical gardening advice using organic methods, expert demos, and a wealth of tips to get the best out of your veg patch.
The day will start with a coffee in the Riverford Field Kitchen with Penny, discussing which areas you most want to learn about during the day.
You will then head outside for a walk around our polytunnel and Field Kitchen Garden where Penny will talk about how we grow organically. During the day, the workshop will cover many topics and there will be many hands-on opportunities where you will sow your own seeds.
Topics covered include:
- Ground preparation
- Crop rotation
- Seed sowing
- Weeding / hoeing
There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and get advice from Penny on any gardening subject throughout the day to ensure you get as much out of it as possible.
Of course, no visit would be complete without eating in The Riverford Field Kitchen, so our chefs will prepare a lunch for you full of freshly picked, seasonal produce from the fields around us.
At the end of the day you will take home some seedlings/seeds so you can get going in your own garden.
