Based in Princetown at the heart of the Dartmoor National Park, Dartmoor Brewery is passionate about brewing top quality cask ales using the finest local ingredients.
Dartmoor Brewery’s story began in 1994 when brewer Simon Loveless created the original, hand crafted Jail Ale in a room behind the Prince of Wales pub in Princetown within sight of the famous Dartmoor Prison that inspired its name. From humble beginnings supplying beer to a handful of local pubs and friends, the Brewery soon outgrew its 15- barrel capacity as the business started to take off.
Cheered on by the popularity of its beers, Dartmoor Brewery relocated to a new £1.5million purpose built premises on the site of the old Princetown railway yard in 2006, and is now officially the highest brewery in England at 1, 465ft above sea level.
Fast-forward more than two decades and Dartmoor Brewery is now producing more than 3 million pints of real ale a year. Although production capacity has increased since its early days in 1994, the Brewery remains true to its craft origins and still prides itself on the production of premium, cask conditioned ales using a traditional brewing system. Dartmoor Brewery is passionate about preserving and promoting Dartmoor by sourcing local ingredients whenever possible, and always uses Dartmoor water in its brews. More than 75% of the malted barley it uses is grown within the Dartmoor National Park.
Dartmoor Brewery now has four core brands that are much loved throughout the Westcountry: Jail Ale (4.8%), Legend (4.4%), Dartmoor IPA (4%) and Dartmoor Best (3.7%), as well as a variety of seasonal beers. READ MORE
