If you love Dartmoor, and you enjoy learning about the history, wildlife, legends, flora and fauna from a knowledgeable, qualified guide, in a friendly and fun way – we are delighted to be able to offer you a new and great fun way to do exactly that!
Dartmoor Pack Ponies Petal and May were born on Dartmoor, to one of the oldest herds still running free on the moor. These two sweet natured little mares will carry your provisions for you, so that during your walk you can enjoy a delicious lunch or cream tea, right out in the breath taking scenery that you’ve come here to enjoy.
For our first official walk with the ponies on 16th July, we are delighted to announce that Paul Rendell, hugely experienced and knowledgeable Dartmoor Guide and Historian will be our leader for the day. Not only that, but Polar Explorer and Dartmoor lover Antony Jinman will also accompany us, providing a fantastic opportunity to walk and talk with two of Dartmoor’s greatest fans! There is a very special price for this first walk of £20, please email, phone or see website to book your place.
Caretaker and handler Robyn Petrie-Ritchie is a Dartmoor girl, born and raised on the moor, exploring on her ponies since she was a small child. She is now part of a Dartmoor farming family that breeds traditional Dartmoor ponies, cattle and sheep, and is offering the wonderful opportunity to enjoy the added fun of walking with these quiet and gentle ponies. (you don’t have to lead them, she will do that!)
With so much of Dartmoor’s history having been carried on the backs of these wonderful ponies we decided that their original use could be a great way to share Dartmoor with others.
For centuries the ponies on the moor were used as pack animals to carry tin from the famous Dartmoor mines and peat from the high moor. They were even used in the war effort, carrying essential supplies. And now, they get to carry a fabulous Dartmoor picnic!
So come and join us on a friendly, fun and easy going mini-adventure on Dartmoor. We are always adding dates to our diary, so do keep an eye on our Facebook page and on our website. Well behaved dogs, under strict control, are welcome to come along as well – have a chat with us first if you wish to bring yours with you.
