Bowdens are proud to host two National Collections: The National Collection of Hostas - 'Halcyon' and Sports and The National Collection of Agapanthus - Pine Cottage Cultivars. We welcome visitors, whether by carload or by coachload
This unique garden was established by Roger and Ann Bowden in the 1990s on several acres of land adjacent to our Sticklepath nursery. After collecting hostas for many years they were awarded a National Collection of Hostas (Halycon & Sports) by Plant Heritage – the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens.
For the gardens, we cater for individuals and families alike, just drop in. Visit to the gardens (other than NGS charity days for which there is a small charge) is free to walk round. We are pleased to offer a range of garden tours to group visitors. Tours are available Monday-Friday 1000am-1600pm, 1st March -31st July 2017. There is partial wheelchair access to the garden. New to see is the evolving stumpery made popular by Prince Charles at Highgrove and agapanthus cultivars which flower June-August.
We have special offers for garden clubs or other tour parties of 15 and more, booking essential for group tours:
Guided Tour and Talk
A personalised meet and greet walking tour carried out by our highly knowledgeable plant expert Peter Savage, subject to his availability for dates requested. This guided tour gives essential points of information, an overview of the Gardens and how Bowdens started the project. The guided tour lasts around twenty minutes to half an hour. You are then free to wander round the gardens at your leisure
The group minimum is 15 for a talk & guided tour. We charge £5.50 per person which includes cake or £6 cream tea. There is free complimentary tea and coffee.
Take a self-guide tour of the garden using the audio guide presented by Tim Penrose featuring stories and points of interest on the trail. The cost of the audio tour is just £3 per person. Free complimentary tea and coffee.
Free to wander round the gardens. Free complimentary tea and coffee.
In order for us to provide you with the best service and ensure that all of our visitors get an excellent experience, it is strongly advised that for group tours you book well in advance and let us know your requirements.
All payments can be made on the day. It will speed entry to the Gardens if the organiser collects the entry fees in advance and settles for the entire group, otherwise some queuing will be unavoidable.
To book phone Robin Burns on 01837 849342 (Mon, Weds & Fri) or email email@example.com
For garden clubs and group tours we offer a 10% discount on all plant purchases.
Don't miss our intriguing plant-hunters log cabin, complete with musty maps, 1930s typewriter and other vintage memorabilia
The gardens are open to the public from 1st April to 31st August, weekdays and Saturdays, 10am to 4pm. Visits outside these times are possible, but please call us before making a special trip. The nursery is open 10am to 4pm April to August weekdays and Saturdays for plant sales of agapanthus, bamboo, ferns, herbs, hostas and tree ferns.
We are always delighted to be asked to speak at a local club. Peter Savage is entertaining and generates great enthusiasm about hostas, ferns and other plants – how to show them at their best and exactly what is involved in running a prestigious plant nursery.
Sessions will feature an entertaining talk and may include plants for sale, an excellent slideshow including the design and build of gold medal winning displays, and an always popular question and answer session. Guests will enter a prize draw when they sign up to receive our special offers by email.
To arrange a talk or enquire about fees for your location, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call Bowdens on 01837 840989
We have a very well stocked nursery, with plants of agapanthus, bamboo, ferns, herbs, hostas, and tree ferns.
If you'd like to take plants home with you, please do ensure you make your purchases well before your departure time to avoid queues and delays. If you are unable to take away plants we can deliver. Please inquire as to shipping charges. Our friendly staff will be on hand should you need help in selecting a plant and can give practical advice on suitability and planting.
